Changing the Way Men Think

Isaiah shares a unique revelation concerning God in chapter 55 of his book. He testifies: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Simply put, there is an enormous difference between the way man thinks and the way God thinks.

The same challenge, the way men think, can also be applied to the current day reality of the absence of men in the home, the church, and the community. This is not meant to imply that the male-man is not present, but rather to the fact that his input continues to decline. Put another way, the male-mans influence on the family and the next generation has diminished greatly. If the home and the family are to be rescued, it must begin with the man. The man remains the key figure when it comes to the way mankind was supposed to think.

In the book, Endangered Masculinity, the following statements are made: The challenge for man is to think like God thinks. Remember a child thinks from the perspective of need. The child is driven by his or her own need. All too often even grown men and women are driven solely by their needs. This represents deception and is one of the major weapons used by the enemy to distract men from the will of God. If a child is to become an adult, his way of thinking must change. How does God think? He thinks from the perspective of truth. (Page 30)

If a boy is to become a man the first thing that must change is the way he thinks. Boys are taught to think about what a man is supposed to be, what a man is supposed to do, and how a man is supposed to think. But the greater need is simply what a man thinks about! If boys are taught only to think about who they are and what they doit is quite possible this thinking is insufficient. All men must be taught to think about truth! Truth is so valuable that it cannot be overlooked or left out of the process of boys becoming men. John writes in his Gospel, chapter 8:32: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. If truth will set a man free, that same truth can bring freedom to his wife, his children and all that he is responsible for.

This is the way God thinks. He thinks from the perspective of truth. His plan for man is that he would know the truth and experience the true freedom that comes as a result. For example, what represents the truth concerning marriage and family? What does the truth have to do with a man being a faithful husband or a good example as a father? It is evident that the man has a significant role to play in the context of family as well as society as a whole. If the way men think does not change, how can anything else he is associated with change as well? We must change the way men think!
