Treasure Your Gift

A mans gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men (Proverbs 18:16).

We are all gifted whether we like it or not! God the Father, in His supreme wisdom, has distributed unique gifts to all His children. Right now, you have a divine gift (a grace) in you that God prepared before time began. He knew exactly what you would need in order to be effective in His Kingdom. However, in troubled times its so easy to loose sight of the fact that God has given each of us a unique gift; and this gift not only brings fulfilment to our lives but great blessing to others. We are all gifted, and when we use our gifts as God intended, they demonstrate the glorious riches of His grace.

Romans 12:6-8 says; Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us usethem: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Some of you may be thinking, How do I find my gift? Gifts are found as we humble ourselves before God to do what He wants us to do. As we do this, He will expose our gifts, and we can trust Him to open the door to use our gifts. Ephesians 2:10 says,For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. As we obediently follow Gods leading, He will prepare us, grace us with His gifts, and give us opportunity to use them. Your gift discovery will take care of itself as you walk with God and serve Him. In the meantime serve Him with what you have in your hand!

We all have something precious to use, so that we can demonstrate the wonder and nature of God (through the grace He has given us). Everything about us, the very breath that gives us life, has been given to us as a gift from the Lord. Our life-flow comes from His presence! And there is a deep need for true restinside each of us. We have a trigger in our DNA that seeks a place of rest. But our rest has to be in Him! The bible says, Godliness with contentment is great gain. Are you content? Have you found a place of rest?

The truth of the matter is that most of us live our lives outside that place of contentment and rest! And often this is because weve stepped out of our area of gifting or calling. For Gods gifts and his call can never be withdrawn (Romans 11:29). Much of the time we are operating in an area that we are not graced in. Remember, if you are trying to employ what you are not gifted with (or called to), you invite hardship, or at the very least become disillusioned. Does this mean you shouldnt try? Absolutely not! What you should be looking at is what motivates you, moves you, and what grips your heart. And then, develop that heartfelt desire. Paul says, stir up the gift that is within you.

Other than operating outside of your gifts and calling, another reason why you may have stopped using the grace thats in you is because you have entered a season of pruning at the hand of the Lord. There are two major reasons for the cut backs you may be experiencing. (1) God wants to remove the dead wood thats evident in your life that which is hindering your gift from operating effectively. (2) He is trying to bring increase to the gift or grace thats upon your life. Either way, it requires pruning (cut-backs). Note, in times of pruning, dont try to run away! I know it is hard to just stand there and see the loss, with seemingly nothing to show for all that you have put your hand to.

You feel like the merchants in the book of Revelations. The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things, which are rich and splendid, have gone from you (Revelation 18:14). Isnt this exactly how you feel sometimes? Yet, Gods plans and purposes have never changed! His intention for you has always been that you abide in that place of contentment and rest, and that whole your life be fruitful.

Notice, our opening scripture (Proverbs 18:16) clearly states that God desires for the gift He has given you to bring you into the presence of the great. If the gift is irrevocable, then so is this promise! But sometimes you have to loose things in order to gain much more! You may even feel like you are running out of time, or it is too late to come before the presence of the great, but you must keep in mind that Jesus said He is the vine we are the branches. There is always abundant life in the vine. Even after the branches have been cut back!

Now we do understand the principal, and why vines do not produce fruit all year round. However, what we may not have knowledge about is this. The Farmer will dig around the vines; will do all that is possible to make sure the branches bring forth their fruit in the seasons they are designed for. Luke 13:7-9, Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground? But he answered and said to him, Sir, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilise it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.God is preparing the soil for your greatness!

Dont ever count yourself out. God hasnt counted you out! He is making sure you produce the best and most effective fruit-fruit that will bring about the victory!

There are many set backs in this life but God is always making sure you get to the next level (moving from glory to glory). His grace is sufficient for you, and these setbacks are just opportunities for you to make acome back. You were designed to be resilient. You are the comeback kid! No matter what the devil throws at you, you keep bouncing back. He may be persistent, but the Spirit of God in you is more persistent and far more powerful.

Remember, the farmers sole intention is to make sure that the vines make a come back. He may cut off what we think looks good, but to him it is dead wood. If you are standing here in church today feeling vulnerable, with nothing to show for all your efforts. Dont give up! For the Bible tells us that old things pass away and all things become new. God (the Farmer) wants you to understand the process and the purpose of the process. Pruning is not harmful, it is very beneficial. Both to the vine and to the farmer! Whats more, dont become anxious because you don not understand fully whats been happening. Treasure your gifts and calling, and keep trusting God. Deuteronomy 29:29 says; The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

You probably know that the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable, and that God will always provide no matter how exposed we feel. Still, you may not like or even understand that the pruning will bring forth new life and fruitfulness. So let me make it clear, God wants to take you from the place of provision to the place of real blessing. Israel understood the place of provision; they lived in it for 40 years. But it wasnt until they entered into what God had prepared for them (the promised land) that they were able to experience Gods true blessings.

That is the place we must all come to – thats the place of great abundance. Its a place of contentment and rest. We must learn to trust in His grace upon our lives, and rest in it! We have to trust in His provision, until we can benefit from His blessing. Rest and contentment will enable us to enjoy the abundant life that Jesus has secured for us. But if youve been struggling, you have to keep believing that great things are yet to come your way. And in spite of the fact that youve been cut back, start rejoicing in the fruit to come.

You must learn to value the gift, and trust Him and His word. When you truly appreciate what God has deposited in you, you will realise that the pruning process is there to make your gift more effective. To usher you into the presence of greatness! Therefore, when you are standing there feeling stripped, and not really desiring to use your gift, remember it is during these times that the most profound work is going on inside you. You are becoming more and more like the vine! In Him you live and move and have your being! The vine is never affected by the state of the branches, only by the state of the soil. However, the branches are seriously effected by the state of the vine. And in our case, this is awesome! Jesus Christ (the True Vine) is causing us to bear the same fruit that He bore – and even greater fruit than this you will produce because I go to My Father!

God speaks about fruit in the midst of pruning; He talks about plenty in the midst of lack; He talks about goals when we lack vision. He talks about joy in the midst of mourning, about beauty when all we see is ashes. He talks about overcoming in the midst of our biggest failure. His focus is not merely on our provision but on the abundant blessings we are about to receive. He gives commands to the unseen things of the spirit realm. God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.(Romans 4:17)

God sees what we do not see. He can even breath life into dead things! He knows the difference between the process and the purpose. There is a place in your gifting and your calling which fulfils the purposefor which you were born. And that place is to rule and reign in all lifes matters. That place is to sit with Jesus at the right hand of God as an over-comer! That place is see those things that do not exist as if they do!

Amos 9:13 A new day is coming, announces the Lord.At that time those who plough the landwill catch up with those who harvest the crops. Those who stomp on grapeswill catch up with those who plant the vines.Fresh wine will drip from the mountains. It will flow down from all of the hills. This is a place where God wants us to get to. Before we have time to think about a situation, the answer has already arrived! We look at the process – He looks at the purpose. He is a purpose-driven God. The reality of whats happening to many of us with regards our grace or gifting is that we are in the place of process. A place where we are still learning to trust (or rest) so we can fulfil Gods plans and purposes. And at the same time, we are being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ – the branches and the vine are becoming one! Jesus went through this process. He despised the shame. That was part of His process. But the scripture continues and says, But for the joy that was set before Him, He endured the cross – that was His purpose! Hebrews 12:2, Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Your gift is continually being placed into a pressure cooker to bring you to where God wants you to be. That is, in the presence of the great. If you take your eyes off the circumstances, the problems that surround you, and look at the gift inside you and the grace upon your life, you will see that the flame is there. Still burning bright!

With many of you it may be small, but all it needs is the fanning of rest and contentment to see it burst into a flaming furnace. So dont let frustration or lack of expression stop you from using the gift you have. If you honour what He has already honoured you with, He will lift you up. Hidden within, you have one of the most powerful tools unknown to mankind. Something that has the ability to change the course of history – for you, your family and those who live in your lifetime. This tool is the gift that God has given you. The gift is in you, but you have the responsibility to stir it up. The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy,For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you(2 Timothy 1:6). In the New King James Version of the Bible, the verse is translated, Stir up the gift of God.

Your gift is not something you need to discover, it is something you must stir up! It is a treasure God has given you. And it is something you must use regularly. No one else can activate your gift for you. You have to do it yourself. So stir up your gift and start using it! If you truly value what God has given you, you will keep using it. And if you keep using it, it will prosper you. Proverbs 17:8; A gift is a precious stone in the eyes of its possessor; wherever he turns, he prospers.

In other words, a gift is like a precious stone to the one who has it, and whenever he stirs it up, it becomes fruitful or prospers. Maybe the reason why you have had to be cut back (pruned) is because God wants your gift to bear more fruit. However, there may be another reason why youve been pruned. Maybe you have not been stirring up your gift at all and it has become lifeless. Remember, God cuts back the dead wood first! Finally, there may be another reason for your cut backs. Have you really treasured the gift that God has placed inside you?
